Rainer Bender, 78, of Keaau died March 10 at Hawaii Care Choices Pohai Malama Care Center. Born in Kassel, Germany, he was a retired Hawaii Police Department officer, retired security officer at Port of Hilo and Hilo International Airport, member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and U.S. Army veteran.
